GEOSET

The ease at which you can go in and record and publish continues to make Mediasite the leader.

Challenge

Florida State University (FSU) is thinking outside the box, the state of Florida and even the continent. With an elevated emphasis on global responsibility for education, they wanted to foster creativity and provide a free resource of educational material with skills and talents of people around the world. So, in 2006, Nobel Prize Winner and Florida State University Professor Sir Harold Kroto and Daniel Simpson founded the Global Educational Outreach for Science, Engineering and Technology (GEOSET).

“It all happened so fast,” said Steve Acquah, FSU Associate Research Professor of Chemistry and Director of GEOSET. “We had a new chemistry building and a brand new Mediasite studio. The biggest problem we had was how to go about creating a free library of educational material for people to download, so Harold set up the GEOSET initiative. In a world where technology advances have progressed at a phenomenal rate, it was clear that a new cost-effective way to delivery education, both here and around the world was required.”

Solution

GEOSET creates a global network of participating sites that deliver exceptional downloadable science, engineering and technology teaching material created by the best science and technology experts and educators via Mediasite.

“With the advantage of quickly publishing presentations online or doing live broadcasts, we know that the Mediasite system will be at the heart of our future endeavors,” Acquah said.

Payoff

As different universities in various countries saw what FSU could do with Mediasite, they jumped on the bandwagon.

“Everywhere we went to demonstrate the technology people asked, ‘How can we get a system like this for ourselves?’ They realized if they don’t invest in this technology they’ll be left behind,” Acquah said.

“The ease at which you can go in and record and publish continues to make Mediasite the leader. To maintain interest in the sciences, we need to be able to change the rules of the game. It’s no surprise that we live an on-demand society so we need to be able to give them lectures, specialized topics and a science information show,” he said.
